About the Senator Hon Matthew Canavan:

Matthew Canavan was sworn in as the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia in July 2016.

Matthew grew up in Logan just south of Brisbane. After achieving a First Class Honours Degree in Economics at the University of Queensland, Matthew worked at the Productivity Commission where he worked on projects ranging from competition laws, housing affordability and national competition policy.

In 2010, Matthew went to work for former Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce as his Chief of Staff. At the 2013 election Matthew was elected to the Senate. He took up his position as a Senator in July 2014 and is based in Rockhampton, the first Senator to be based in that city for more than 20 years. As a Senator, Matthew successfully campaigned for greater assistance to families, greater protections for small business and farmers in competition law and helped develop a sugar code of conduct to protect cane growing family farmers.

He was appointed Minister for Northern Australia in early 2016 and entered Cabinet in July 2016 when Resources was added to his portfolio responsibilities. He continues to serve as Minister for
Resources and Northern Australia following the Coalition’s election win in May 2019. As the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Matthew has passionately advocated for the
development of nation-building projects in Australia’s north and the opening up of new resource basins. The Liberal National government has delivered support for dam projects in North
Queensland and the opening up of the coal and gas rich Galilee Basin through the Adani project. The Galilee Basin will be the first coal basin opened in Australia for more than 50 years.
Matthew has also helped deliver more gas for Australian consumers through the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism and has delivered Australia’s first National Resources Statement
for 20 years. That statement sets as Australia goal to be the best resources nation in the world.

Matthew is a former Lions Youth of the Year and worked as a Leader with the Christian Brothers on Edmund Rice Camps, where he met his wife. They now live in Yeppoon near Rockhampton, with their four sons and daughter. While Matthew’s family is very proud of him being preselected by the LNP to run for the Senate, his Father remains slightly disappointed he gave up cricket at 16 and therefore never fulfilled his true calling to play test cricket for Australia.
