Mr Jeff Robinson named as Australia’s next Ambassador to the Republic of Korea

On December 9th, the Australian Foreign Minister, Senator the Hon Penny Wong, officially announced the appointment of Mr Jeff Robinson as the upcoming Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. Ambassador-designate Robinson is set to commence his duties early next year.

Mr Robinson, a seasoned career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, recently served as the Assistant Secretary in the AUKUS Non-Proliferation Branch. His extensive background includes roles such as Consul-General in Honolulu and previous postings to the Republic of Korea (twice) and Japan.

During a recent visit to Brisbane, Ambassador-Designate Robinson engaged in discussions with Mr Ryan Freer, Vice Chair of AustCham Korea. Mr Freer provided an overview of the Chamber’s activities and its key priorities for 2024. Mr Robinson expressed his enthusiasm for advancing the bilateral relationship as both Ambassador and Honorary Patron of AustCham Korea.

Having previously been involved with AustCham Korea during his earlier tenure in Korea, the Chamber is eager to build upon the synergies already developed, underscoring its steadfast commitment to enhancing Australia-Korea business relations. As Australia’s fourth-largest trading partner and third-largest export destination, the Republic of Korea holds significant economic importance.

Ambassador-designate Robinson’s role is poised to play a crucial part in advancing diplomatic relations, economic cooperation, and cultural exchanges between Australia and South Korea, particularly with the tenth anniversary of the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement approaching.

The Chamber expresses profound appreciation to the outgoing Ambassador, Her Excellency Catherine Raper, for her valuable contributions to AustCham Korea and her dedication to enhancing Australia’s interests in the Republic of Korea since 2021.
