Mayor of Townsville Visits Seoul

On Tuesday, October 11, 2022, the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea met with the Mayor of Townsville, Councillor Jenny Hill. The Mayor was joined by Claudia Brumme-Smith, CEO of Townsville Enterprise, and Jonte Verwey, Councillor Advisor.

The Mayor and Townsville delegation were in Seoul after visiting Townsville’s sister city, Suwon, for a couple of days. This Sister City agreement with Suwon, Korea was established in 1996, and Councillor Hill spoke highly of the close connection the council has with their Suwon counterpart.

Hydrogen was high on the agenda for Townsville this trip, with plans to pin the city as Australia’s top renewable hydrogen powerhouse. Key players in this project are Ark Energy, with their first hydrogen hub, called ‘SunHQ’, located within a major industrial precinct at the Sun Metals Zinc Refinery in Townsville, North Queensland.

AustCham Korea was delighted to learn from the Mayor and her team about Townsville’s plans for hydrogen, and looks forward to promoting more exciting news from the Northern Queensland city!
