AustCham Korea Accompanies Minister Szakacs to Korean War Memorial for Wreath-Laying Ceremony

On Sunday, 21 October, AustCham Korea’s Senior Advisor, Jacco Zwetsloot, had the honour of accompanying the Hon. Joe Szakacs, South Australia’s Minister for Veterans Affairs, to the Korean War Memorial in Seoul. During the visit, Minister Szakacs laid two floral wreaths in tribute to the over 17,000 Australian soldiers who served in the Korean War, including the 340 who lost their lives and more than 1,216 who were wounded.
Following the wreath-laying ceremony, AustCham Korea led Minister Szakacs and his delegation on a tour of the museum’s exhibitions, providing insight into the historical context, causes, and progression of the Korean War. Australia’s vital military and humanitarian support during the conflict was highlighted, as well as South Korea’s ongoing commitment to global peacekeeping missions as a reflection of the international solidarity shown during the war.
This visit aligns with AustCham Korea’s long-standing dedication to preserving the legacy of the ANZACs and Australia’s sacrifice during the Korean War. Each year, the Chamber commemorates the Battle of Gapyeong by donating educational scholarships to local students on behalf of its Platinum and Gold Members. Furthermore, AustCham Korea representatives participate in the ANZAC Day dawn service, laying a wreath at the memorial annually to honour the enduring bond between Australia and South Korea.
