Energy and Climate Change Forum

First Joint Event by AustCham and AmCham focuses on key energy and climate change issues

AustCham and the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) hosted a first-ever joint event on May 8, 2013 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
The event was attended by some 70 people from both Chambers who enjoyed a thought-provoking presentation by Christoph Frei, Secretary General of the World Energy Council.

Christoph’s presentation focuses on the big issues impacting the global energy market namely:
          Climate Change
          Middle East Dynamics
          Global Economics
          Energy Prices.

These big issues then translate in to what Christoph referred to as the “Energy Trilema”, which he described as the interplay between energy demand, emissions and the need for electricity. Increasingly, policy makers globally are being drawn into a parallel “Policy Trilema” that has to balance energy security with social equity and environmental management.

Christoph challenged the audience to consider if the global energy markets are at a tipping point with abundant new supply especially from shale gas and shale oil redrawing the global energy map with new dynamics and a new reality that the world will “run out of climate before it runs out of oil”.

The World Energy Council will be holding its triennial global conference “The World Energy Congress” in Daegu, South Korea in October this year. This conference has been held every 3 years since 1924 and is a highly respected forum that is well attended by policy makers, industry leaders and other stakeholders in the energy, climate change and social issues fields.
