About Garry Weaven:
Garry Weaven is widely renowned as one of the architects of Australia’s compulsory occupational pension system, known as superannuation. In his role as Assistant Secretary at the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) in the 1980s, Garry played a fundamental role in the establishment of retirement funds for workers across a broad range of industries, known as industry superannuation funds.  Garry was the founding Chair of a number of leading funds which today are responsible for the retirement savings of about half the nation’s workforce.

Garry’s leadership also contributed to the establishment of a number of collective vehicles owned by the industry superannuation funds to deliver services efficiently across the funds, and thereby achieve scale, lower costs, and greater innovation.  Garry founded and was the Chair for nearly 20 years of Industry Funds Management, now known as IFM Investors, a leading global provider of investment services to pension funds and over 300 like-minded institutional investors around the world across infrastructure, debt investments, listed equity and private equity.  Garry was also the founding Executive Chair of Industry Fund Services, the chair of ME Bank, and the group holding company, Industry Super Holdings Ltd.  He also chaired online Australian newspaper The New Daily (thenewdaily.com.au) up until his retirement at the end of 2018.

Garry’s contribution to the public service included serving as a foundation member of Infrastructure Australia, an independent statutory body with a mandate to prioritise and progress nationally significant infrastructure, and the Melbourne Docklands Authority.

Garry was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, and studied Economics at La Trobe University, graduating in the early 1970s.
