There are hundreds of international students from South Korea calling Perth their home. Most students rely on financial assistance from their families but also make up a significant labour force in the hospitality and casual work sector in Perth.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent lockdown laws, many students are struggling to pay for basic daily necessities. There have been reports that some students have faced eviction from their accommodation and others have been unable to return to Korea to be with their families
because of financial hardship or travel restrictions. The AKBCWA will be providing 90 home essential kits on a first come first basis this weekend.
Commenting on this initiative, WA Honorary Consul for the Republic of Korea, Ms Fay Duda said “the assistance of AKBCWA is welcome support for vulnerable Korean international students needing basic supplies”.

Tommy Shin, Executive Chairman of the AKBCWA also quoted that “…international students are important to WA and our economy. The AKBCWA supports the WA State Government’s leadership on providing guidance to international students in WA.”
